What are signs of a cooling system problem?

What are signs of a cooling system problem?Overheating can cause serious engine trouble, so you'll want to make sure your cooling system stays in great shape. Important parts of your cooling system include the radiator, thermostat, water pump, and hoses. When you first suspect trouble with your cooling system, you'll want to be proactive about addressing it. At O'Donnell's Auto & Truck Repair, our local mechanics are experts at taking care of cooling system issues. Give us a call if you encounter any of the following signs of a cooling system problem.

Indications of Cooling System Failure

Cooling system leaks are often the reason that cars overheat. If your coolant has gotten surprisingly low, then you may be dealing with a leak. An internal leak can produce white exhaust smoke, which is symptomatic of a blown head gasket. With an external coolant leak, you may see bright green fluid accumulating on the ground where you've been parked, though your coolant could be a different color such as yellow or pink. Another potential sign of a coolant leak is that your coolant warning light comes on. If your car is leaking coolant, then the decrease in fluid pressure can lower the coolant's boiling point. In turn, you may see white steam rising up from below your hood. When you're in a situation where you need to add coolant, make sure you first let your engine cool off. If you open the cap to add coolant with a hot engine, then scorching fluid may shoot up and scald you.

You'll also want to keep an eye on your temperature gauge. If it rises into the red, then it'll be best to pull over when you safely can. At that point, you can call up the shop and explain what's happening. Then you can get advice on whether it seems like your car is safely driveable---or if it'll be better to get a tow instead of taking any chances.
